Chest of drawers U-453

An iconic cabinet, a part of the series U-450, designed by the Czech designer Jiří Jiroutek for the national enterprise Interier Praha. He began to work on U-450 series right after the ´58 Expo exhibition in Brussels. The success of the Czech pavilion pushed Czech design toward a soft modernism of pastel colours and new geometries which would later be called ‘Brussels Style’ and the U-450 sideboards would become its leading exemplars. These cabinets were revolutionary in the technical innovations that allowed their mass production and affordable prices in times when there was a great demand for furniture in Czechoslovakia. This U-453 sideboard has a veneered wooden construction, drawers have bright pastel-coloured formica fronts (pink-black-gray combination) with running black handles that give this design unique plasticity.
