A type of Persian carpet called Gabbeh. The Gabbeh is a hand-woven carpet, traditionally made by nomadic people in southern Iran. The Gabbeh carpet is made of plant dyed handspun woollen yarn, the pattern is made with knots tied onto a woollen warp. The carpet is typically divided into large fields of solid colour with small primitive animal figures. The word Gabbeh means raw, natural, uncut. Gabbeh is much thicker than other Persian carpets. The Iranian Gabbeh manufacturers were one of the few that persisted in working with natural vegetable dyes through twentieth century, their carpets therefore became very popular in the western world. The simple figures of the animals on this model are very typical, as well as the side striped pattern with irregular lines. The carpet is in a very good condition.
