Detailed information

Product detailed description

Wooden sideboard with an attached vitrine, also known as a "television", was designed in the 1940s by Jindřich Halabala for the UP závody in Brno. The sideboard is a perfect and relatively rare example of a bridge between two eras. It combines the luxury and ornamentation of the waning Art Deco period with the experimentation and functionality of the emerging modernist movement.

The renowned Czech designer of functionalist furniture Jindřich Halabala was originally a carpenter and later graduated from the School of Applied Arts under Professor Pavel Janák. Halabala worked at the Brno headquarters of UP závody, where he had been main architect and head of the studio from 1925 to 1955. His furniture was characterized by rounded shapes and the clean lines of functionalist design.

The sideboard consists of two parts. The upper, smaller part has a square shape and features sliding glass doors. Inside, it has a glass shelf; the back is covered by a mirror, and the walls are painted a rich yellow. It sits atop the lower, larger rectangular part, which contains a system of various drawers and storage shelves. This sturdy sideboard has rounded edges and a body made of solid walnut and veneer. The other parts are made of beech wood. The surface is stained in a rich brown to rusty shade with a matte finish and contrasting elements in dark brown. The inner parts of the sideboard are light in color. It has a beautiful wood grain; the front is veneered in a checkerboard pattern with a unique handle shaped like a chocolate bar. The sideboard is in excellent condition after a complete renovation in our workshop.
