A bentwood table designed by Jan Bočan in 1972 for the Czechoslovak Embassy in Stockholm and manufactured by TON. It represents the absolute pinnacle of Czechoslovak embassy design in the 1970s. In this project, Bočan created a total work of art (Gesamtkunstwerk), where architecture seamlessly blended into the designer’s interior furnishings. The distinctive red stain became the iconic signature of the entire Stockholm collection and is today one of the most sought-after chapters of Czechoslovak late modernism. The table’s defining feature is its sculpted base made of bent solid beech. Four smoothly curved frames converge at the center and then elegantly fan out toward the corners, creating a sturdy yet visually light base for the square veneered tabletop. The original red stain highlights the natural structure and grain of the beech wood, which subtly shines through the varnish. The table combines masterful wood-bending technology with Jan Bočan’s visionary concept. It is in very good original condition. The wood is scuffed in places, and there is a lighter-colored ring from a glass on the tabletop.
